The UPSC English Literature optional is a focused and text-based paper that tests both close reading and critical understanding. Paper I: 1600 to 1900

Paper I includes major movements such as the Renaissance, Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama, Metaphysical Poetry, Epic and Mock-epic, Neo-classicism, Satire, The Romantic Movement, The Rise of the Novel, and The Victorian Age. Students must study these movements with a clear understanding of themes, style, and historical context.

The prescribed texts in Paper I include:

• Shakespeare: King Learand The Tempest.
• John Donne: selected poems such as Canonization, Death be not proud, The Good Morrow, On his Mistress going to bed, and The Relic.
• Milton: Paradise LostBooks I, II, IV, and IX.
• Alexander Pope: The Rape of the Lock.
• Wordsworth: selected poems including Tintern Abbey, Ode on Intimations of Immortality, Resolution and Independence, and others.
• Tennyson: In Memoriam.
• Ibsen: A Doll’s House.

The prose section includes important novels like:

• Swift: Gulliver’s Travels.
• Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice.
• Fielding: Tom Jones.
• Dickens: Hard Times.
• George Eliot: The Mill on the Floss.
• Thomas Hardy: Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
• Mark Twain: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Paper II: 1900 to 1990

Paper II focuses on modern and contemporary literature. The major movements include Modernism, Poets of the Thirties, Stream-of-consciousness novel, Absurd Drama, Colonialism and Post-Colonialism, Indian Writing in English, Marxist, Psychoanalytical and Feminist approaches, and Post-Modernism. These areas require students to understand not only texts, but also literary ideas and critical frameworks.

The prescribed texts in Paper II include:

• B. Yeats: selected poems such as Easter 1916, The Second Coming, Sailing to Byzantium, Among School Children, and others.
• S. Eliot: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Journey of the Magi, and Burnt Norton.
• H. Auden: selected poems including Partition, Musee des Beaux Arts, The Unknown Citizen, September 1, 1939, and others.
• John Osborne: Look Back in Anger.
• Samuel Beckett: Waiting for Godot.
• Philip Larkin: selected poems such as Next Please, Deceptions, Afternoons, Days, and Bleaney.
• K. Ramanujan: selected poems including Looking for a Causim on a Swing, A River, Love Poem for a Wife 1, Small-Scale Reflections on a Great House, and Obituary.

The prose section includes:

• Joseph Conrad: Lord Jim.
• James Joyce: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
• H. Lawrence: Sons and Lovers.
• M. Forster: A Passage to India.
• Virginia Woolf: Mrs Dalloway.
• Raja Rao: Kanthapura.
• S. Naipaul: A House for Mr. Biswas.
