GATE 2027 is being conducted by IIT Madras, and registration is now open for eligible candidates.
For English Literature aspirants, this is the time to begin focused preparation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) – English section, also known as XH2 in the revised paper structure. The GATE 2027 official notification confirms that registration was rescheduled to 27 August 2026, with the regular application deadline set for 27 September 2026 and the extended window continuing until 5 October 2026. Students should complete their registration well before the deadline and carefully check the official GATE portal for application instructions, document requirements, fee details, and updates.
GATE English: Paper Structure
GATE English is offered under the Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) paper.
Under the revised 2027 structure, candidates take the common Reasoning and Comprehension section (XH0) and select one optional section; English is XH2.
The paper carries 100 marks in total:
- 15 marks:General Aptitude, common to all GATE papers.
- 25 marks:XH0 Reasoning and Comprehension, common to all XH candidates.
- 60 marks:XH2 English, the selected optional section.
The official syllabus covers areas such as literary forms and genres, the history of English literature and literary studies, comparative and world literatures in English translation, critical theories, and related areas of literary study.
