Tips for Managing Time for Writing Descriptive Answers

1. Understand the intent of the question: Before you start writing, you must take 30-60 seconds to read the question carefully. Ask yourself whether the question is descriptive, comparative, analytical or evaluative? Then you must consider the focus of the question. You have to figure out if you need to focus on a theme, a character, a movement, or a technique.

Example: Q. Discuss the role of fate in Thomas Hardy’s novels.
This question isn’t asking for a summary of his novels. Focus only on how fate governs his characters.

Tip: Circle keywords like role, fate, Thomas Hardy, discuss—and keep your writing aligned with these.

2. Don’t over-exceed your arguments: Don’t write too much for an answer. Just add one or two examples. examples. Avoid going off-track or adding more examples than needed.

Don’t write 3 pages on Romanticism when the question is only worth 8 marks. Write 2-3 crisp arguments with brief examples. Keep your paragraphs tight. Short answer type questions should be written within 125 words.

3. Plan before writing: You should spend the first two minutes before writing descriptive answers.

Structure:

• Introduction(1 para) – Define the concept or introduce the topic
• Body(2–3 paras) – Build 2–3 key arguments with examples
• Conclusion(1 para) – Wrap up with your viewpoint or critical insight

Result: You write faster, stay relevant, and avoid rewriting or deleting later.

4. Don’t Repeat the Same Arguments

Repetition not only wastes time but also shows a lack of depth.

Bad Example:
“Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tragic hero. He faces tragedy. His life is full of tragic moments.”
(This says the same thing in three ways.)

Good Example:
“Hamlet’s tragedy stems from his indecision, a flaw that delays action and intensifies the dramatic tension.”

Use one strong example per point, not three weak repetitions. Avoid repetition of words in the same sentence. To address this, you need to focus on building your vocabulary and understanding the syntax. Avoid grammatical or spelling errors when writing your descriptive answers.

5. Write clearly: Your words should add value to the answer. You should avoid over-writing or over-expressing yourself. Your writing must make sense. Therefore, avoid writing complex sentences. Break it down to ensure readability. This will reduce your time and make your writing more precise and comprehensive.
6. Allot Time Per Answer

If you’re writing multiple descriptive answers (like in a mock or teaching demo), plan your time per answer:

Set a timer while practicing. This conditions your mind to think and write fast.

7. Practice mock tests:You must practice mock-tests once a week. Set aside 60 minutes to answer 4-5 questions. When practicing descriptive answers, you must focus on structure, speed, staying within word limits, and finishing all answers in a timely manner. After writing, you must review your answers to check if you have repeated the same arguments, ideas, exceeded time, or wrote answers without understanding the question.
