If you are aiming for such roles, then you must have a sound knowledge of research and teaching aptitude? Don’t you think so?! Hmmm…therefore, UGC-NET Paper 1 covers teaching and research aptitude. In this blog, we will just cover one aspect of teaching aptitude where we will discuss various methods of teaching. Do you know how many ways there are for teaching? Nope! Read on to get acquainted with teaching methods.
What are the teaching methods?
Are you sitting with your pen and notebook? No! Great! What a great learner we have in our reading corner who just scrolls through. Scrolling does not help in qualifying for the UGC-NET/JRF exam. So, sit like a good learner and prepare UGC-NET paper 1 notes. We are going to discuss the teaching methods which you will be using in your classrooms. Yup! So, take it seriously!
Let us now get to the point. Teaching methods cover one aspect of the UGC-NET paper 1 syllabus.
Teaching methods are the strategies and techniques teachers use to convey information to help students learn and think. It also involves careful evaluation and assessments in ensuring the right knowledge is passed on to the pupils. Teaching methods can be classified into three categories: instructional design (teacher-led), student-centred (learner-directed), and collaborative (group-oriented).
Teaching methods can vary from one institution to another but lectures are a standard method used in the classroom. There are other methods too! Do not worry. We will not deliver lectures in writing.
Factors to consider before using any pedagogy
Before selecting your teaching methods, ask the following questions:
- What age group will be studying?
- What level of education does everyone have?
- Are they beginners or experts in their field already?
- How much time do I have to work with them, and how long can my attention span last when working individually/in groups?
- Do I want more information about the topic than just the basics? So, is it an educational experience, or do I need something fun and entertaining for people who don’t know anything about the subject matter at hand?
Types of Teaching Methods
Teacher-Centred Models
In these methods, the teacher plays the major role in delivering knowledge, and students are passive recipients.
Lecture Method: In this teaching method, the teacher delivers information through a structured talk. It covers large amounts of content efficiently. In this method, students can ask questions after the completion of lectures if they do not understand something. However, teachers have complete control over what information gets shared with students. The method also allows students to take notes on important topics covered by instructors. There are some challenges associated with the lecture method. Like, it may be boring for students who prefer more hands-on activities and lack engagement between instructors and their learners.
Lectures can be used effectively if educators have a lot of content to share. This method can be used when there is not enough time for students to engage with their course content. Lecture methods are best taught by teachers who can keep student’s attention and clearly deliver information so that everyone can understand what is being said.
Demonstration Method: In this method, the teacher shows a process, experiment, or skill while explaining it. This method is commonly used when teaching sciences or imparting vocational education. This method helps visual learners but requires resources and preparation.
Direct Instruction: This method is highly structured, and involves step-by-step teaching. It focuses on repetition, drills, and practice. This is effective when instructors are imparting basic skills but may limit creativity.
Student-Centred Models
These teaching methods are focused on student engagement, participation, and problem-solving.
Discussion Method: This method encourages students to express ideas and debate. It is effective for developing critical thinking skills. It requires an active and knowledgeable teacher to moderate.
Inquiry-based learning: In this method, students explore topics by asking questions and conducting research. It promotes deeper understanding but requires more time.
Problem-based learning: Here, students solve real-world problems using research and critical thinking. It is commonly used in medical and business education. It helps in developing analytical skills but can be challenging to implement.
Cooperative learning: In this method, students work in small groups to complete tasks and projects. It promotes teamwork, but some students may contribute less.
Experiential Learning Methods
These teaching strategies focus on learning from experiences and reflection.
Project-based learning: Here, the students work on a long-term project which is often interdisciplinary in nature. It encourages creativity and real-world application.
Case study method: Under this method, students analyze real or fictional scenarios to apply theoretical concepts. This method is quite pertinently used in business, law, and medicine.
Role-playing: Students take on roles to experience different perspectives. It is used in training for diplomacy, management, and conflict resolution.
Tech-Empowered Teaching Method
Nowadays, technology is driving the teaching method.
Flipped Classroom: Students study new materials at home and classes are used for discussions and practice. It encourages active learning but requires self-discipline.
Blended Learning: This teaching method involves a mix of traditional and online learning. It is flexible but requires access to technology.
Gamification: In this teaching method, instructors can use game elements to make learning engaging. This improves motivation and requires careful planning.
Special and Inclusive Teaching Methods
These teaching methods are meant for meeting different learning needs.
Differentiated Instruction: It is tailored teaching method to meet individual student’s needs. It ensures progress for all students but requires extra planning.
Montessori Method: This is self-directed learning with hands-on activities. It encourages independence but might lack structure.
Multisensory learning: This teaching method involves multiple senses to enhance understanding. It is useful for students with learning disabilities.
