Who is Walt Whitman?

Born on Long Island, Walt Whitman grew up in Brooklyn and received limited formal education. Throughout his life, he worked in diverse occupations, including printer, schoolteacher, reporter, and editor. His self-published collection Leaves of Grass, inspired in part by his travels through the American frontier and his admiration for Ralph Waldo Emerson, marked a revolutionary moment in American poetry. This seminal work underwent eight editions during Whitman’s lifetime, as he expanded, revised, and added to the original collection of 12 poems. Emerson himself praised the first edition as “the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed.”

Whitman even published his own enthusiastic review of Leaves of Grass, but critics and readers found his unconventional style and bold subject matter unnerving. According to The Longman Anthology of Poetry, Whitman received little public acclaim in his lifetime for several reasons: his openness about sex, his self-presentation as a rough working man, and his stylistic innovations. A poet who abandoned the regular meter and rhyme patterns of his contemporaries, Whitman was influenced by the long cadences and rhetorical strategies of Biblical poetry. His daring style and themes were so controversial that upon publishing Leaves of Grass, he was fired from his job with the Department of the Interior.

Despite a mixed critical reception in the United States, Whitman was favourably received in England, where prominent writers like Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Algernon Charles Swinburne celebrated his work as groundbreaking.

During the Civil War, Whitman worked as a clerk in Washington, D.C. In his spare time, he devoted himself to visiting wounded soldiers, dressing their injuries, and offering comfort. These deeply personal experiences inspired the powerful poems in his 1865 collection Drum-Taps, which includes his famous elegy for Abraham Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”

After suffering a serious stroke in 1873, Whitman moved to his brother’s home in Camden, New Jersey. While his poetry failed to attract widespread popular attention during his lifetime, his funeral drew over 1,000 mourners, a testament to his growing influence. Today, as the first poet of a truly American voice, Whitman’s legacy endures, shaping the course of modern poetry and American literature.
