3. Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811)

Key Works: The Prince of Homburg, Penthesilea

Kleist’s plays delve into psychological complexity, irrationality, and the tension between reason and emotion. The Prince of Homburg examines themes such as duty and individuality, while Penthesilea is a violent and poetic reimagining of Greek myth which explores the destructive potential of love and obsession. His work, once underappreciated, is now hailed for its intensity and innovation.

4. Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956)

Key Works: Mother Courage and Her Children, The Threepenny Opera, The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Brecht revolutionized 20th-century theatre with his concept of “epic theatre.” It promoted rationality rather than emotional involvement. He used techniques like breaking the fourth wall, direct audience address, and narrative interruption. His politically charged plays often critiqued capitalism, war, and social injustice, making him one of the most influential dramatists of the modern era.

5. Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805)

Key Works: William Tell, Mary Stuart, The Robbers

A close friend of Goethe and a giant of classical German drama, Schiller’s works are known for their exploration of freedom, justice, and moral dilemmas. His early play The Robbers challenged authority and was a rallying cry for the young and restless of his time. Mary Stuart and William Tell reflect his interest in historical and political subjects and continue to be performed worldwide.

6. Frank Wedekind (1864–1918)

Key Works: Spring Awakening, Lulu plays

Wedekind challenged bourgeois morality and censorship with his bold, provocative themes. Spring Awakening is a play about adolescent sexuality and repression which was considered scandalous in its time but is now a staple in modern theatre and was adapted into a successful rock musical. His Lulu plays explore female sexuality and social hypocrisy.

7. Roland Schimmelpfennig (b. 1967)

Key Works: The Golden Dragon, Arabian Night

One of the most performed contemporary German playwrights, Schimmelpfennig blends poetic language, magical realism, and fragmented storytelling. His plays cross cultural boundaries and often reflect global concerns, making him a vital voice in 21st-century theatre.

8. Peter Weiss (1916–1982)

Key Work: Marat/Sade

Peter Weiss combined avant-garde techniques with historical and political themes. His best-known work, Marat/Sade (The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade), is a meta-theatrical masterpiece that juxtaposes revolutionary ideals with madness, performed as a play within a play.

9. Elfriede Jelinek (b. 1946)

Key Works: Bambiland, The Piano Teacher

A Nobel Laureate in Literature, Jelinek is known for her avant-garde style and feminist critiques. Her works deconstruct language, power structures, and social norms. Her plays often lack traditional characters and narrative, creating a disorienting but deeply reflective experience.

10. Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989)

Key Works: Heldenplatz, The Ignoramus and the Madman

Though Austrian by birth, Bernhard’s scathing critiques of Austrian and German society, culture, and politics made him a critical voice in German-language theatre. His plays are often marked by long monologues, existential themes, and a relentless probing of human absurdity.
