Types of Hypotheses

1. Null Hypothesis (H₀)

The null hypothesis states that there is no relationship or effect between the variables.

Example: “There is no significant difference between online and offline learning outcomes.”

2. Alternative Hypothesis (H₁ or Ha)

The alternative hypothesis contradicts the null. It states that there is a relationship or effect between variables.

3. Directional Hypothesis

A directional hypothesis specifies the expected direction of the relationship between variables (positive or negative).

Example: “Students who sleep more than 7 hours score higher in exams than those who don’t.”

Common in quantitative studies where prior research supports a particular trend.

4. Non-Directional Hypothesis

This hypothesis predicts a relationship, but does not specify the direction.

Example: “There is a difference in exam scores between students who sleep more than 7 hours and those who don’t.”

This kind of hypothesis is used when the direction of the relationship is uncertain or unexplored.

5. Simple Hypothesis

A simple hypothesis states the relationship between two variables: one independent and one dependent.

Example: “Increasing physical activity reduces blood pressure.”

You can use the simple hypothesis in basic experiments and surveys.

6. Complex Hypothesis

This involves more than two variables (multiple independent or dependent variables).

Example: “Stress levels and diet quality influence student academic performance.”

This kind of hypothesis is commonly used in studies with multi-variable frameworks.

7. Empirical Hypothesis (Working Hypothesis)

This is a hypothesis that is being tested. Once supported by evidence, it becomes part of the theory.

Example: A researcher is testing the hypothesis:
“Music improves concentration in students during study hours.”

8. Statistical Hypothesis

This is expressed in statistical terms, often used in hypothesis testing.

Example:
H₀: μ₁ = μ₂ (no difference)
H₁: μ₁ ≠ μ₂ (there is a difference)
