For this cycle, the UGC NET English (Paper 2 – English Literature) exam is scheduled on 5 January 2026 in the first shift.
That means:
- You will appear for Paper 1 and Paper 2 together in the morning session(as per current NTA pattern).
- Reporting time, gate closing time, and other detailed instructions will be printed on your Admit Card—students must download it from the official NTA UGC NET website a few days before the exam.
- The usual pattern is:
- Paper 1: 50 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour.
- Paper 2 (English): 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours.
- No negative marking, so your aim should be to attempt maximum questions with accuracy.
Since the exam is in the first shift, your body clock, sleep cycle, and practice routine should be tuned to solving full-length tests in the morning. This can make a noticeable difference to your performance on 5 January.
Important Things to Do Before the Exam
In the last few days before 5 January 2026:
- Download and print your Admit Card: Check your name, subject code (English), exam centre, date, and shift carefully.
- Carry required documents:
- Printed admit card.
- Valid photo ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Voter ID, etc.).
- Passport-size photographs (as per instructions).
- Check centre location one day before: If possible, know the route and approximate travel time.
- Avoid starting new books: Focus on consolidating what you have already studied—British Literature, Literary Criticism & Theory, Indian & World Literature, Linguistics, and key PYQs.
Your target now is not “studying everything,” but revising the right things in the right way.
Last Few Days’ Strategy by Prof. Vineet Pandey
To guide students through this crucial final phase, Prof. Vineet Pandey has shared a dedicated “Last Few Days Strategy” for UGC NET English. In this special video session, he explains:
- What to revise in the last 7–10 daysfor maximum output.
- How to divide your time between:
- Paper 1 quick revision.
- Paper 2 core areas: British Literature, Criticism & Theory, Indian Literature, American & World Literature, and PYQs.
- Which units/topics typically produce a high number of questionsand must not be skipped.
- How to use PYQs (Previous Year Questions)as the backbone of your final practice.
- How many mock tests to attempt, and how to analyse them without panicking.
In the video, he gives a day-wise and block-wise planning approach, so even if you feel your preparation is incomplete, you know how to use the remaining days intelligently rather than randomly.
This strategy video is available on the Sahitya Classes / UGC NET English YouTube channel, and every serious English aspirant is strongly advised to watch it at least once, make a small checklist, and keep it near the study table during these final days.
Why Following this Strategy Matters for 5 January 2026
With the exam date fixed as 5 January 2026 (First Shift):
- There is no time to experimentwith new methods. A tried-and-tested last-phase plan from an experienced mentor helps you stay focused.
- You avoid the two biggest last-minute mistakes:
- Trying to cover too many new topics and ending up confused.
- Ignoring revision of frequently asked concepts and PYQs.
- You align your revision with realistic expectations of the paper, not just with what’s written in thick theory books.
UGC NET English Paper 2 by Vineet Sir is widely followed because it connects content + pattern + strategy. This particular “last few days” plan is like a condensed guide to what you must do between now and 5 January 2026 to give yourself the best chance of qualifying.
FAQs – UGC NET English Exam (5 January 2026, First Shift)
Q1: When is the UGC NET English exam?
A: The UGC NET English (Paper 2) exam is on 5 January 2026 in the first shift.
Q2: Will Paper 1 and Paper 2 be on the same day?
A: Yes. As per current pattern, Paper 1 and Paper 2 are held in the same sitting, one after the other, within the assigned shift.
Q3: Where can I see Prof. Vineet Pandey’s last few days’ strategy?
A: On the Sahitya Classes / UGC NET English YouTube channel, where he has uploaded a special strategy video for the final days before the exam.
Q4: What should I focus on in the last week?
A:
- Revision of British Literature, Criticism & Theory, important Indian/American/World authors.
- Solving PYQs and 1–2 full mocks.
- Quick review of Paper 1 concepts and formulas.
Q5: Is it advisable to start new topics now?
A: Generally no. It is better to strengthen what you already know and revise high-yield areas than to start entirely new topics close to the exam.
Q6: How can I align my routine with the first shift?
A: For at least 5–7 days before the exam, wake up, revise, and attempt practice sets during morning hours, so your brain is fully active at the same time your real exam will be held.
If you commit to a disciplined final-phase plan, follow Vineet Sir’s last few days’ strategy, and use the remaining time wisely, the 5 January 2026 attempt can become your turning point in UGC NET English.
