Are you all set for your UGC-NET exam? Hmmm…did you prepare Bloom’s Taxonomy? Never ever heard about it. Oh no! Don’t do this! It is a part of your UGC-NET Paper I syllabus. You can’t ignore Benjamin Bloom. All modern education relies on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Therefore, you need to be considerate enough when preparing for UGC-NET Paper I. It is not just an academic concept. It is a practical framework that every future educator should know. For UGC-NET Paper I, mastering it will not only help you score better in Teaching Aptitude, but also shape your understanding of effective teaching and assessment.

So, remember this:
To teach well, you must first think well. And Bloom’s Taxonomy is your roadmap.

Let’s understand the Bloom’s Taxonomy in this blog.

What’s Bloom’s Taxonomy?

Bloom’s Taxonomy is a classification of different levels of human cognition — essentially, how we think and learn. It was originally created in 1956 by a group of educational psychologists led by Benjamin Bloom and later revised in 2001 by Anderson and Krathwohl.

It’s widely used in educational settings to design learning objectives, assessments, and curricula. This is crucial because it reflects how teaching and evaluation should be aligned.

Why is Bloom’s Taxonomy Important for UGC-NET Paper I?

In the Teaching Aptitude section of UGC-NET Paper I, Bloom’s Taxonomy appears under:

  • Cognitive learning levels
  • Instructional objectives
  • Teaching-learning process
  • Assessment and evaluation

You may be asked direct questions like:

  • “Which level of Bloom’s Taxonomy is involved in critical thinking?”
  • “Arrange the following in the order of Bloom’s original taxonomy.”

So, understanding both the original and revised versions is essential.

The Original Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956)

It consists of six hierarchical levels (bottom to top), each representing a level of learning:

  1. Knowledge– Recall facts (e.g., dates, formulas)
  2. Comprehension– Understand meaning (e.g., explain in your own words)
  3. Application– Use knowledge in new situations (e.g., solve a problem)
  4. Analysis– Break down concepts (e.g., identify causes or motives)
  5. Synthesis– Combine elements to form a new whole (e.g., write an essay)
  6. Evaluation– Judge value (e.g., assess theories, critique)

Mnemonic: KCAASE – King Charles Always Asked Smart Elders

The Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (2001)

This version uses verbs to reflect active learning and switches the last two levels:

  1. Remembering
  2. Understanding
  3. Applying
  4. Analyzing
  5. Evaluating
  6. Creating

Mnemonic: RUAAEC – Ramesh Used Apple And Eat Cake

Also, it introduces two dimensions:

  • Knowledge Dimension (Factual, Conceptual, Procedural, Metacognitive)
  • Cognitive Process Dimension (the six verbs above)
